Top Time Savers for Busy Families

If you’ve ever had one of those days where you’re late for everything and nothing goes as planned, well – we feel your pain. What’s worse, is that they always seem to happen when you have the busiest possible day ahead and not a second to breathe. Take heart – stuff like this doesn’t need to ruin your whole day. Read on for some great time saving tips that will help you handle life’s curveballs and even avoid them when you can.

Make Lists Your Friend

Lists are the busy Mom or Dad’s best friend. They help streamline tasks, categorize similar activities and can be a fun way to get the whole family involved. There are a few different ways you can use lists to your time-saving advantage.

Start categorizing your shopping lists. Do you need milk? File it under necessities. If you need light bulbs and batteries, they would be considered a household need.

Get the kids involved by creating a list of to-do’s just for them and stick it on the fridge. Make crossing things off a really positive experience by using stickers or allotting allowances based on completed tasks.

Create a family calendar and put it somewhere everyone has access to it. Include things that need to be done daily, weekly and monthly so that it’s clear what’s on the agenda. If you need to, write down who is responsible for what to ensure things get done properly.

Chalkboards or white boards can make lists really fun and super easy to update. They don’t cost very much so you can even keep one in each major room if you feel so inclined.

If and when you can, prioritize. Label what’s most important and what’s least important so that the necessary things get finished on time.

10 Second Tidy

Don’t wait until a problem arises or things are at their dirtiest before getting involved. Spend 5 minutes a day dealing with the little things that tend to add up over time.

Once a week set aside some time to clean bad food out of the fridge and wipe down the shelves
Designate a day of the week to each room of your house and spend 2 - 5 minutes tidying and/or dusting, windexing etc.

Rinse your dishes and put them right in the dishwasher instead of letting them pile up in the sink. A good rule of thumb is not to touch a dish twice, deal with it as soon as it’s dirty. There is an exception to this rule for stuck on dirt – don’t spend too much time trying to scrub it off, let it soak and come back to it later.

Create a lost and found! Instead of trying to track down the mate to a lonely sock or figure out whose missing a white t-shirt, pick a spot in your house for lost items and throw anything out of place in there.

Think Ahead

Trying to get out the door, plan for the day or whip up a meal when you’re tired or in a rush can be a big time struggle. Instead of putting yourself through the stress, plan ahead of time and keep your whole day running at a smooth pace.

If you have school aged children or typically bring lunch to work, think about lunches for the week early on and pack them the night before. Bentobox lunches are all the rage right now and a really cool take on the traditional meal.

Cook double portions of your favorite meals and freeze them. You can even try alternating weeks, cooking for one and eating precooked meals the next.

Pick one or two days a week to do your grocery shopping – Tuesday and Saturday work well for scattering it throughout the week.

If your morning will be busy, set out your clothing at night so it’s not something you have to think about when you wake up.


Some people can’t imagine living an unorganized life, others scoff at the thought of everything having a place. Whether you agree or not, knowing where things are can save a lot of time and frustration.

Avoid losing your keys in your home, even for a second by giving them a designated spot and putting them there all the time. Even if it’s just a tack on the wall, knowing where they are will give you peace of mind when you’re on the go.

Keep your linen closet crazy-free by using baskets to organize unsightly items. Sheets have a funny tendency of looking messy, no matter how they’re folded. Put each set inside of one of it’s pillow cases to keep things looking nice.

Use baskets in your fridge – it will free up space and make clean-up a lot easier.

There are lots of ways to save time during the day, these are just a few of our favs. Although some of them may seem like a lot of work at the start, once you’ve worked them into your daily routine they should take less than 10 minutes a day.
